Wood Finishes

Log End Sealant

End Grain Sealant for Logs

Exposed log ends are often the first place moisture-related problems appear on a log home. Log End Seal helps protect vulnerable areas. It creates a clear, water-repellent barrier that limits water absorption and reduces excessive checking.

The end grain of a log acts like a straw. Moisture draws in faster than surrounding wood. As the home endures rain, snow, and ice, deterioration becomes an issue. This finish helps shield exposed log ends while preserving their natural appearance.

Perma-Chink log end sealant  dries clear and is intended for use with Lifeline wood finishes as part of a complete exterior wood care system.

Perma-Chink Log End Seal applied to exposed log ends, creating a clear water-repellent barrier that protects against moisture, rot, and excessive checking.

Log End Sealant Available Sizes

Log End Seal is available in a 1-gallon container. Because the product is applied only to exposed log ends rather than entire wall surfaces, a single gallon can cover a surprising amount of area.

For new construction, spot treatment of vulnerable log ends, and routine maintenance projects, our end grain sealant for logs is a practical choice.

Product Information

Exposed log ends need a different level of attention than broad wall surfaces because end grain absorbs moisture quickly. This end-grain sealant for logs dries clear, helping protect vulnerable cuts without changing the look of the wood.

Features

  • Dries clear
  • Protects from snow and rain
  • Prevents excessive checking

How to Store

Secure the lid when the product is not in use. One gallon can last through multiple projects. Store the remaining log end sealant in a dry environment with moderate temperatures. Areas exposed to freezing will affect consistency.

How to Apply

Brush the product directly onto clean, dry end grain. Pay attention to freshly cut surfaces and areas showing signs of weather exposure. A complete, even coat is more important than speed.

Maintenance

Look closely at exposed log ends when inspecting the structure. Areas that receive heavy sun, rain, or snow will need periodic touch-ups. Actively sealing those surfaces reduces moisture-related issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lifeline FAQ

Do Lifeline finishes need a clear topcoat?

Yes. For all Lifeline exterior finishes we recommend Advance topcoat in either satin or gloss finish. Lifeline interior finishes we recommend Acrylic or PCS Clear Shield.

Do your finishes offer UV protection?

Yes. Ultra-7 and Ultra-2 finishes have UV Boost premixed. UV Boost is available to add to other Lifeline finishes.

Do I need to stain first before chinking?

It depends on the project. We recommend applying finish first, then chink. Read our article here for more info.

We’ve used the Perma-Chink Lifeline Exterior on a large rough cut cedar siding home. It has looked so beautiful and lasted so long that other contractors have asked what we used because they haven’t found anything that performs as well. We have also used the interior products with the same wonderful results.

–Jane

I have a cabin in Washington State where I used your Lifeline Exterior finish on. The Stain is very easy to use and still looks like I just put it on yesterday, and it’s been on my home for over 7 years. Thanks for making such a durable & long lasting finish.

–Kurt

Absolutely love Perma-chink products. We are doing our entire interior with Perma-chink Lifeline, Acrylic, and Sure Shine products and results are outstanding.

–Dave

A coat of Prelude Sealer made my uneven pine logs look balanced and consistent. It also made the Ultra 7 much easier to apply. I’m very happy with these products.

–Susan

Thanks to Perma-Chink for showing me that moisture comes into the logs on the end. So I used their Log End Seal to prevent moisture from seeping into my logs. It works great.
