Closed-Cell Foam Backer Rod for Log Homes
Foam backing fills the unused space first, leaving a controlled area for the finished application. Perma-Chink Systems offers several backer rod sizes for narrow openings and wider log joints.
Backer Rod is extruded closed-cell polyethylene rod that is used in cracks, checks and gaps before filling them with sealants like our Perma-Chink, Energy Seal and Check Mate 2. Caulk joints should not be more than 3/8” thick and Backer Rod provides a way to fill a deep crevice or gap while maintaining the proper sealant thickness for maximum performance. Backer Rod should also be used in checks over 1/4” wide before applying Check Mate 2.

A large backer rod also reduces the amount of sealant needed where the space between logs runs especially deep. These rods should be used to assure proper thickness of sealants including Perma-Chink, Energy Seal and Check Mate 2

Every project calls for a diameter that matches the width of the joint or check being repaired. Each box includes two rolls of backer rod, except for the 1-inch diameter, which is packaged as one roll per box. Individual rolls are also available when a full box is not needed.

Product Information
Proper joint preparation begins before the sealant is applied. Our backer rod for log homes uses a foam backing. Place it inside the opening beneath Perma-Chink, Energy Seal, and Check Mate 2 to seal joints between log courses. Wider checks also need proper backing before proceeding.

How to Store
Leave each roll in its packaging until installation. Different backer rod sizes stay in better shape when nothing heavy rests on them. Keep sharp tools away from the foam. A shelf inside the shop beats an open trailer or a damp jobsite between projects.
Application Process
Choose a diameter that fills the opening with light compression, then press the large backer rod into place without stretching it. Leave enough space below the surface for the recommended sealant depth. Before continuing, ensure that the material is evenly distributed.
After Installation
Once the joint is sealed, the foam remains secure. Inspect the sealant during routine log home maintenance. Exposure to the elements will occur. Replacing damaged sealant with the correct backer rod sizes beneath the repair helps restore the proper joint depth before a new application.

Do I need to use backing material?

No. The wrong foam, like pink or blue colored foam, will “out-gas” and cause blisters in sealants.
