Ferrari Structures

When you pair an excellent contractor/applicator and very good products the outcome is a high level of satisfaction. Gene Ferrari is a first-rate guy and skilled professional. His work is an extension of the value he places on working hard and working carefully. It is clear he knows log home maintenance, repair, and construction. In addition, he knows Perma-Chink products and their application. Gene not only made our home look great he also repaired needed areas on the porch and dormer. Gene was responsive to my questions and always kept me informed about his plans and progress. He even took extra measures to ensure good product application when rain presented a problem.

I am a fan of Perma-Chink products, and this is the third time I selected them above others available. I am also a big fan of Gene Ferrari of Ferrari Structures & Woodworks. This is my first experience with Gene, and his crew. It will not be the last. A very good product matched with an excellent contractor (and person) is not always easy to find. This time I hit the worker jackpot and the look of a log home haven.

Performance Log Finishers Project

Perma-Chink Systems Product Applicators: Performance Log Finishers

Perma-Chink Systems Products Used: Log Wash, Energy Seal, Lifeline Ultra-7, Lifeline Advanced Gloss

This painted log home is a hunting cabin located in Okeechobee, FL. The home owner was having issues with rot and needed a solution. Removing the paint was the first thing we suggested and we informed him of the damage painting logs can cause. The customer agreed to move forward with removing the red paint that covered this beautiful home.

Wow! We truly had some work a head of us, such a time consuming task this was for our guys. Red paint is hard enough to remove so when we found a white primer underneath that paint it meant hand sanding! The crew was able to remove all paint and primer from the home after 100 man hours of hand sanding. Once the crew was done with hand sanding it unearthed this home’s true beauty.

The crew then removed all deteriorated wood and replaced with new. We cleaned the home with Log Wash to ensure all debris and potential contaminants were removed from the substrate. The home was now ready to have backing material and Energy Seal in Dark Natural installed, once stained over it will blend nicely. Walls were stained with Perma-Chink’s Ultra-7 in Chestnut (1-coat) followed with Lifeline Advanced Clear Top Coat in Gloss (1-coat) for the final touch.

Finally, the crew repainted all porch ceilings, dormers, fascia, soffit, posts, beams, chimney, window and door trim with paint the home owner picked out for the home.

This home is ready to withstand the test of time!

LogDoctors Project

Applicator Project by LogDoctors

Perma-Chink Systems Product Applicators: LogDoctors of Eastwood, LLC

Perma-Chink Systems Products Used: Log Wash, Armor-Guard, Lifeline Prelude, Lifeline Ultra-7, Lifeline Advanced Gloss

This was an interesting project involving fire damage to one wall of the log home. The clients had built this lovely log home, and one evening, while inside watching TV, they heard a car pull into the driveway and start honking their horn. The family immediately headed outside to see what was going on, only to find out their propane tank was on fire and had spread to the house. Everyone jumped into action, and with the help of the local fire department, extinguished the fire before it burned the entire house down.

The following steps were taken to restore the damaged area of the exterior wall:

  1. We assessed the damage and removed all burnt logs.
  2. We fit new replacement logs sections where the damage had been.
  3. We media blasted the entire wall to make sure the repair would blend in nicely.
  4. We used Log Wash to properly prep the surface.
  5. We applied Armor-Guard to the bare wood.
  6. We applied a single coat of Lifeline Prelude.
  7. We applied a single coat of Lifeline Ultra-7 Cedar (#385).
  8. We finished the project with a coat of Lifeline Advanced Top Coat in Gloss.

Testimonials

Hi Greg,

I would like to let you know how very much I appreciate your help and assistance with the process of re-staining my cabin. I was a bit overwhelmed, and a little anxious about doing the project myself. Once I was put in touch with Greg, and we discussed the individual steps of the entire process, worked out the expected sq. footage, and decided on the proper chemicals, the plan all came together.

First, Greg was a fantastic help in getting samples sent out for comparison of the current cabin color. Next, we determined the supplies (cleaner, stain, topcoat) for my project. An amazing surprise was the speedy shipping. I believe that my order was placed about 1pm on a Friday, and FedEx rolled up my driveway to delivery the supplies at 9:30 the next morning!

The pdf files online and the discussions with Greg gave me clear instructions on the steps for my project, and all things considered, it couldn’t have gone smoother. One unforeseen, minor setback that I encountered, is one sun-exposed wall was much thirstier than planned for, and I ended up using more stain than anticipated. One easy reorder call and a resupply is headed my way.

Again, I thank you greatly for your expertise and assistance in making my project a “honey did” instead of a “honey do”.

Store History

History of Perma-Chink Systems in Knoxville, TN.

Perma-Chink Systems was incorporated in 1981, in Redmond, Washington. Actual production of Perma-Chink was started in 1983, in a 5,000 sq. ft. facility on Prosser Road in Knoxville, TN. This small facility produced, warehoused, and shipped our first product, Perma-Chink, and had a total of three employees; one production and shipping worker, an office manager, and the main manager.

Before long, it was deemed undersized for storage of finished goods, raw materials, and other incidentals needed to produce our product. A large tent was rented to be able to store pails, chemicals, and other items outside to enable us to purchase in larger quantities to meet the needs of the industry. Before too long we realized that too was undersized and inefficient; so in 1987, we moved across the street into a 20,000 sq. ft. facility where all of our products are currently manufactured.

In 1987, we also introduced our first exterior and interior stains to complement the Perma-Chink log home sealant; so additional equipment and more employees were needed to facilitate production and shipping. The office and sales staff had also grown; we now had three inside office workers and four production and shipping employees. We also had one outside salesperson to serve our customers better and listen to their needs for different products for log homes.

As time went on the product line grew, as well as the employee needs to meet the demands for products. In 1992, our sister company, Stuc-O-Flex International, was formed and Perma-Chink started to manufacture elastomeric stucco for their needs. Needless to say, there were also machine improvements and additional employees to cover those needs as well. In 2000, another company was formed to sell Borate based preservatives into the pest control industry, as well as the log home industry. The Borate production is situated in a 7,000 sq. ft. facility directly across the street from the main production facility. We also had added a full time chemist to the staff to work on product improvement and development.

Fast forward to today: we have moved finished goods into another building, next door to the production facility, due to being overcrowded and needing more space for raw materials. We also moved the sales, logistics, and customer service personnel to another building in the warehouse complex to be more efficient. We now have two full-time chemists, and a quality control department to develop products and improve on what we also currently produce. We currently have 32 full-time employees to serve the needs of our customers.

In looking ahead: Our mission will always be to instil, inspire, and nurture the preservation of the American spirit of log home living. We shall do this by promising to provide exceptional products that perform as promised, and will be safe for everyone and the environment.
